While settling in New York, escaping from the Nazis in 1941 Ernst married Peggy Guggenheim who helped him escape to the U.S.  The painting is from her collection.  

This painting is full of characters from the upheaval of Ernst's personal life.  The two horse headed females in this painting represent the spirit of Carrington, his lover left in France.
